If regular release, the most common reason for monitoring is likley to be toxicity, for which a 2 hr peak sample is indicated.
For efficacy, a trough (just before the next dose) is suggested.
For slow or extended release preparations, a trough is indicated, or if problems with response, a peak and trough are indicated.
